I believe the quote: “Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard” portrays my whole journey as a dancer thus far. I was not always the strongest dancer, but I worked diligently to become the dancer I dreamed of being. I’ve been able to achieve many amazing things because of my work ethic. I owe a lot of my success as a dancer to my ballet training because it is the base for all other styles. It has helped me establish my technique, movement and artistry at the same time. I have always dreamed of dancing at the Joffrey and doing an intensive because it is the premiere dance school in the USA. The Joffrey has amazing programs made to cultivate dancers to new heights, and is comprised of some of the most prestigious instructors in the world. I would truly love to continue developing my passion, movement and technique in dance and I feel that the faculty at Joffrey would push me to reach my goals, and help me grow as a dancer.
Dance is not just something that I love doing; I need it. I need it to express myself and tell stories, to tell my stories, to tell others’ stories. Dance has pulled something out of me that nothing else ever could. I can express any emotion I want through dance. The words I cannot say through my mouth can be said through my movement. It’s like I am painting a picture each time I dance. The dance floor is my canvas, my expressions and movements the colors, and I am the paintbrush. Dance empowers me to be anyone I want to be. Dance, with all its diversity of styles and ways of expressing myself gives me strength and confidence. The diverse dance environment that is the Joffrey Ballet School will allow me to continue to paint pictures on canvas with my body and dance to my potential. The multi-discipline training provided by its accomplished and talented faculty will help me continue to improve my technique and develop my artistic performance. I can think of no greater privilege than to spend my summer immersed in the world of the Joffrey Ballet School.
As an aspiring young artist, I dance to defy the expectations of what the perfect image of dancer is supposed to be and to prove to everyone that to be a successful dancer, all you need is your love and passion for it. Dance let’s me tell my story in a universal language that everyone can enjoy! I’ve personally been told that I won’t ever make into the dance world because of my body type and for a while, I agreed with all of those people who’d brought me down. I love everything about dance, from the callused toes and feet to the grueling 6 hour long rehearsals. I LOVE to dance. I love pushing my mind and body to new limits and expressing myself through movement. I live for the pure, happy feeling I get as I pour my soul into my performances. The Joffery Ballet school is known world wide for their exceptional dance training. It has been the stepping stone for numerous professional dancers that have gone on to make their marks in the dance world. I dream of no better place to dance with as I continue my journey as a young artist.
This summer I had a wonderful experience at Joffrey Ballet School. I was introduced to Horton and Character Dance. I also participated in Ballet and Hip Hop classes. We had nine days of intensive training in all areas of dance and on the tenth day we gave a performance and invited a few family members. My ballet teacher immediately noticed that I had made improvements in my technique. I was also taught exercises to help stretch properly. My mother was so impressed with how quickly I was able to learn various steps/movements in Character and use the castanets. I am usually very shy but I think that my summer experience helped me to gain confidence. I performed with confidence and had a lot of fun. All of the Joffrey Dance Instructors were patient and caring. They really helped us to learn the various types of dances, and challenged us to improve. I met students from all around the world at Joffrey this summer. There were male and female students from Africa, Spain and other countries. I also met students from various states such as North Carolina, California, and Florida. I made many friends. My time at Joffrey N.Y was Great!
Surprising. If I had to choose just one word to describe my experiences this summer with Joffrey, surprising would be that word. When I decided to attend a Joffrey program I expected something incredible. I knew I would be dancing in a wonderful environment with world-renowned staff. The Southwest Dallas Intensive not only met my expectations, it exceeded them magnificently. I never could have imagined the number of opportunities that were available to me at Joffrey. Not only did I have the chance to take classes from inspiring instructors such as Desmond Richardson, I had the opportunity to work with them on a personal level. I gained invaluable information that would not be available to me anywhere else. For this reason I was able to push myself to my limits and achieve more than I had previously thought possible. The biggest surprise however, was the amount of personal growth I experienced. Never in my life have I discovered more about myself, both as a dancer and as a human being, than I did in just two short weeks with Joffrey. Some people hate surprises, but for me the Joffrey experience was a surprise in all the best possible ways.
For the past two summers, I have attended the Joffrey Ballet NYC Intensive. Both experiences were unforgettable, and after both intensives, my dance teachers at home are always surprised about how much I have improved. When I went back this past summer, I was surprised about how many teachers remembered me from the year before. The teachers are very good at giving the students all the individual attention that is needed, and the teachers are constantly pushing the students to reach new levels of their potential. This past summer was so helpful in improving my dance technique and I know that I would not be in the stage of my dance career without those two summer I spent at Joffrey Ballet NYC. Getting into and attending the summer program was such an accomplishment and I am so glad I got to spend my summers at a place as special and as talented as Joffrey Ballet School. Joffrey Ballet is the world premiere dance school in the USA because of the teachers and the staff, and being able to attend it again would be such an honor. I am so thankful for this program and for all it has taught me.
I attended the Joffrey Jazz & Contemporary Intensive in New York this summer. It was definitely an adventure that I was looking forward to embarking on, and it was most definitely a great experience. My dream job is to be on Broadway and being able to work with professional choreographers helped me believe that my dream can easily be reached. This experience has advanced my technique and performance skills in a way that I could not imagine. It was also a very humbling experience to be around so many passionate dancers who all just wanted to be free and learn. While reflecting on my time at Joffrey I would ask myself ,"Would I want to do this again?'. My answer was simply "I would not have it any other way." I loved my time spent in the studios, and I know that I will be better off because of it. I am truly grateful of the opportunity I was given to attend this intensive.
At its core, dance is the transformation of the body. The body undertakes impossible risks that hopefully become the beauty and grace that the English language deems “dance”. The passion that is found in the soul of a disciplined dancer always amazes me; it is a true zeal for one’s craft. My own passion for dance is drawn from freedom found within discipline, technique, and reform. I choose to cultivate my passion for dance by spreading it through my community and through myself; by devoting my entire being to dance, the art that I share with dance history and the family of dancers before me. I believe that dance education reflects what the individual dancer applies, but more how the dancer internalizes dance in his or her own body, mind, and spirit. The Joffrey School reflects the ever-changing transformation within the body, but also the contemporary transfiguration of dance education, and has since its start in 1953. Joffrey is committed to an innovated education, one that I cannot surpass as I pave my path as an artist. I hope that I will be accepted into Joffrey’s scholarship program in order to further pursue my passion and education as a dancer.
After my first summer training with Joffrey I am confident in saying that it is the premiere dance school in the United States. I have attended numerous conventions, studios and intensives, but one summer at here has had the biggest impact on my technique, stage presence and performance qualities. I was trained by experienced teachers, who danced with some of the most prestigious companies around the world, many of whom are still working professionals. I received individualized attention from instructors who were able to pinpoint exactly which critiques I needed, corrected me in an informative and professional manner and ultimately transformed the way I dance. In a changing dance culture, it’s essential that students are versatile. Trainees are provided with outstanding classes in not only ballet, but contemporary, jazz and modern as well. Due to brilliant teaching, outstanding administration and the most dedicated students I left the Joffrey with confidence, heightened aspirations and the courage to follow my dreams. I credit their programs with playing a crucial role in my future accomplishments and look forward to my next opportunity to train with them.
“Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle” -Napoleon Hill. This quote perfectly describes my adventure during the entire 6 weeks I spent at the Joffrey West LA summer intensive. During the program I was pushed and challenged physically, enabling my passion for dance to fire and flourish. Walking out of the studio at the end of week one, I obtained an unbelievable sense of accomplishment and growth, nonetheless I was worn out. I realized my training was going to be the farthest thing from easy however all the long strenuous days proved more than worth it! I couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend my summer. I am honored to have gotten the opportunity to not only learn diverse techniques, but also to get a firsthand look of what a professional career takes. I always hear that dance is not a sport but the commitment, endurance, and passion shared by this group I had the privilege to dance with said otherwise. My summer was unforgettable and I was incredibly pleased to be welcomed to the Joffrey family, and hope to be with them for many more years to come!
Dance has always been a part of my life, but it seemed like an unattainable dream, not a reality. I doubted the fact that I could do it for the rest of my life. At the age of thirteen, I took my first musical theater class, which was terrifying. I couldn't sing, I couldn't act, and I could barely move because of the butterflies in my stomach! But from that moment, I knew that it was something that needed to be a part of my life forever. When Joffrey opened a musical theater intensive, I did everything in my power to get that audition (including taking voice lessons which was very frightening!) What I experienced was hands down the most incredible and rewarding 2 weeks of my life. Joffrey has helped me realize that dance CAN be a career..if I work hard enough. I was able to show myself that dance is my passion, which changed my life for the better. I can't wait for another summer at Joffrey to expand my love and knowledge of Broadway and further my comfort levels even more. I love to dance and I will do it for as long as I can.
This past summer, I had the distinct honor (and pleasure!) of attending Joffrey Ballet School NYC Ballet Intensive 2015. It was truly a remarkable experience that challenged my technique and artistry and helped me grow as a dancer! I improved, learned, and discovered my individuality as a dancer with the help of many amazing instructors. Words cannot express how honored I am to have been taught by talented professionals, such as Akop Akopian, Gaiane Akopian, Marina Bogdanova, and Andrei Jouravlev. I also got the opportunity to meet other dancers in the program from different countries, which is a testament that though language barriers exist, dance is something that can connect us all around the world. Overall, my JBS experience was incredibly motivating and life-changing and made me realize not just what the art of ballet is to me, but what I’m to the art of ballet. It was an absolute dream come true. As the daughter of an active duty soldier and educator, they’ve sacrificed so much in support of my dreams of being a dancer. If blessed with the opportunity to return for the Summer 2016 Intensives, I’d be eternally grateful and deeply indebted to Joffrey Ballet School.
I had the privilege to attend the Joffrey Miami Tap Spectacular last June and it was the most eye opening and incredible experience. I have taken tap classes since I was five years old, and this camp showed me that there are so many techniques that I still need to learn and master. I learned that going back to the basics is so crucial in tap, because technique is everything. The teachers were very kind and taught me how to tap correctly and helped me add the correct technique. The Joffrey ballet school is the premiere dance school in the USA because of their state of the art camps with endless opportunities, with the most experienced artists in their craft that come and teach students all around the world. They teach from the bottom up and engage each student in their classes and give their advice. We can see the passion they have for dance which makes me realize how beautiful the art is and made me more passionate about dancing. The Joffrey Ballet school is the world premiere dance school and I feel so honored to have been apart of one of their camps this past summer.
Experience. Of. A. Lifetime. The 2015 Joffrey New York Ballet Summer Intensive was a truly unparalleled memory: a trying, but exuberantly rewarding time of growth in not only technique, but also artistry. I found myself through dance and developed as both a dancer and a person. Inspired everyday by the world-renown teachers and the prodigious talent present, the exceptional classes pushed me to work to the extent of my abilities and discover all that I am capable of. An undeniable passion grew out of an innate love for the art form, and the Joffrey Ballet School was responsible for it. Chills run down my spine just thinking about the significant advice of Mr.Robertson, Africa Guzman, Mr.McSween, Mrs.Duffy, and Misty Copeland, among other notable teachers. Surrounded by welcoming, benevolent peers and instructors, I fell in love with the atmosphere of the Joffrey Ballet School that so evidently makes it the premier dance school in the USA: the fundamental sentiment of true compassion and will to be excellent in all senses was ubiquitous throughout the intensive. I am forever thankful for the opportunity I had and hope with immense zeal that I can experience it again with the help of this scholarship!
The Joffrey Ballet School has molded me into the dancer I am and will be in the future. This summer, I attended two very amazing and different Joffrey Summer intensives. For two weeks, I attended the Joffrey San Francisco intensive. Josie Walsh, the artistic director, guided us through these weeks of exploration with a contemporary and classical ballet fusion. Each day, the teachers pushed me and allowed me to find my own artistry in the guidelines given. I feel this intensive heightened my technique, simultaneously making me into a new artist. Later, I attended the Joffrey Experience. In two weeks time, Michael Blake’s handpicked staff and choreographers gave me their own perspective of contemporary dance. I received the pleasure to be in Josie Walsh and Donald Byrd’s pieces. Working with Josie was a collaborative and exploratory experience and she created a new, captivating piece on our group. Donald Byrd challenged each of us, and I was able to perform apiece previously performed by professionals. Today, because of the experiences I received from Joffrey, I am apart of their J&C trainee program. Joffrey is the premier dance school in America, because it trains dancers to become artists and later, professionals.
I was fortunate to attend one week Musical Theater and one week Ballet Intensive this past summer in NYC. The entire program pushed me as a dancer and have learned life skills that I will carry with me forever. This was the first time I was away from home. The housing staff made me feel very comfortable and safe. I made life-long world wide friends and learned how to navigate the city. I loved everything about Broadway Musical Theater! Being taught by these professionals really has inspired me to continue on this track. Learning non-verbal scenes, acting, singing, make-up, seeing Wicked made me realize what it takes to make it on Broadway!! During my ballet week I struggled a little because the teachers taught fast but this just pushed me to work harder. My favorite was Pas De Deux. I never did this before and I really liked learning how to balance and partner. I improved a lot in that week in ballet and become stronger on pointe. This was the best 2 weeks of my summer! Joffrey has impacted me in so many wonderful ways as a dancer, artist and young lady! I can't wait to go back!
Doing what you love is so important. When you find your passion, it feels like home. Being able to pursue your passion and really give it your all: it’s an indescribable feeling. Working so hard at such a pristine and demanding art form, like dance, is so rewarding. Last year I was accepted into Joffrey summer intensives as well as the trainee program, but unfortunately, we couldn’t afford it. I stayed in New York City with my mom for a few days to tour, and take a few classes at Joffrey. Being in New York was amazing, though it was so different from what I was used to in New Hampshire. But, when I walked into Joffrey, it felt like home. Not only because the staff and students were so kind, but because I was there pursuing my passion. Being able to train at Joffrey over the summer would be an amazing opportunity; I know I would improve and grow as a dancer and as a person. Joffrey is filled with talented, passionate, and caring people from all over the world. Many people have left Joffrey with better training and experiences. I would be honored to be one of them.
HI My name is Perris amento and I am 12 years old. I was blessed to attend your 1 week ballet intensive in San francisco. My ballet techer, my parents, and my grandpa all pulled together enough money to pay for tuition. And they all came along! That 1 week was the most inspiring week that I ever had in my dance career. I remember in mr. Michaels class, I had a moment where I felt like I wanted it. I wanted better feet, I wanted better arms, I wanted to be a better dancer than I was yesterday. I pushed myself to the max in just that hour and I felt like something had clicked in my mind about dance. From there on, I have tried my hardest that I can in every class so I could become the dancer I wanted to be. And I thank all of the teachers that I worked with that week that inspired me and made me a better dancer. I would really love to attend this year's Joffrey intensive because I would really love to be inspired like that again. And the staff was amazing too!
"My hope is to shed light, provoke thought, entertain, and move through dance" (Dwight Rhoden). I want to inspire people to follow their dream. I want to be looked up to just as I have looked up to many people. I want to do that by being the very best person and dancer I can. I want to share my passion-perfecting it and expressing it. When I don’t feel like getting up some mornings, I remember I have the privilege of dancing and creating something beautiful for watching eyes. Dance is my life; I am sometimes at my studio just as many hours as at home. I dance, I eat, I sleep, I breathe, I enjoy myself. The studio is my second home. Joffrey Ballet School has made dance accessible to many people through a variety of class options and scholarships, giving them unique opportunities to train with prestigious teachers, evolve into versatile and individualistic artists, and challenge themselves. I hope I have the chance to meet these teachers at Joffrey Ballet School and push myself even further while perfecting my artistry and technique so I can inspire others.
“The essence of dance is the expression of the soul…dance reveals yourself” (Martha Graham).Utilizing dance as means of expression of internal emotions and motives have always challenged me as a dancer. There is a distinct difference between those who can execute flawless technique versus those who harmonize self-expression and technique into true art form. However under the instruction of Josie Walsh and other notable faculty at Joffrey West I was able to come to the realization of my true potential as an artistic dancer. Throughout my 6 week course, I was able to experience a perfect balance between technical training and more choreography based training. By having such a wide variety of dance classes, I learned both new forms of dance and absorbed the different styles of the various choreographers that taught. Not only was I able to further enhance the quality of my movement, I became more self aware about my lack of artistry as a dancer. Nevertheless, with daily training from choreographers of superb artistic ability and unique stylization, I significantly improved both in technique and in artistry over the course of my stay. Nonetheless, I could not ask for a more rewarding program than Joffrey West.
Last summer I attended Joffrey San Francisco 2015. It was the best intensive I have ever been to. I made so many life long friends. One of my favorite teachers at the intensive was Josie Walsh and that's because she pushed me to be a better dancer and not just a competition/convention dancer. Josie would always ask me, "Marcus do you want to be a house of cards, or a castle?" I have taken that question and used it as my mantra in life. If I have a strong foundation I can branch out and really fuse technique and movement to create art. One of the things I love most about dance is an instructor can tell me to do ten steps across the floor anyway I want and there's an infinite amount of ways I can do it and really make it my own. Joffrey is the leading Ballet school in the US because it teaches its students not to be a ballet robot, but a dancer who can move and take direction from a choreographer and make it their own.
My passion for dance began when I was just 4 years old and saw a pa de deux class at my sister's ballet school when we were picking her up one day. I was fascinated by the movement and poise of the male dancers and I told my mum I wanted to do that someday. 10 years of blood, sweat, and tears later, I've joined that very same class and had the opportunity to dance with a multitude of different youth companies. Dance allows me a platform to refine my body and skills and I enjoy the precision and dedication it takes to attempt to achieve perfection. When I take the stage, I feel powerful and it's as if I could achieve anything. To be able to even get the chance to attend the Joffrey Ballet School is an opportunity to work with some of the best instructors in the world that will push me to become my best self and help me achieve my goals of becoming a dancer. I'm looking forward to enhancing my technique as well as exploring my own artistic side through Joffrey's unique and inspiring programs.
Some years ago I realized that dance was becoming something more serious to me. Each day I was enjoying more the dance classes, the choreographies, and every movement. Each new class was an opportunity to feel myself as part of what this art is. There were days when I felt that my conditions were not enough to reach a good level of quality and compared myself with the others. Then I realized I had two options: to continue thinking this way or to believe in myself, and make the most of what God has given me, coming back the next day and work harder to do my best. I love what dance offers me: to show and share sentiments and emotions and to reach not only the public but that universe we have inside waiting to be discovered. A few weeks ago I read about The Joffrey Ballet School, and I found what I was looking for: well trained teachers and a working atmosphere that pursues art and motivation. This is what I appreciate from Joffrey, a place that inspires and provides knowledge and feelings that only a great art can offer to those that are always searching.
Dance has always been my escape from the traditional classroom, and dancing this summer at the Joffrey School's New York City Ballet Intensive truly embodied that feeling. The six weeks I spent at Joffrey were truly the most rewarding six weeks I have ever had as a dancer. Within my cleverly entitled groups, Demille and Petipa, I stood out as an older dancer, but one who was also incredibly passionate and dedicated to the Joffrey experience. I was in constant awe of my teachers and classmates and through working with different teachers almost every day and for almost every class, it was clear to me that the limits of learning simply did not exist. I worked harder than I have worked in a long time and am utterly grateful to those teachers who took the time to work specifically with me on my technique and grace. Being able to dance and learn at the world premiere dance school in the US is not something that many students are able to say, and after my six weeks at Joffrey I am confident that I am a better dancer and an even better student for having studied there.
Instead of counting sheep to fall asleep, I lay in bed thinking about my future dance career. Dance is what I live for, life without it is like the world without the sun. Whenever I dance I feel a fuzzy, happy feeling inside, knowing THIS is what I want to do with my life. As I continue to grow, I continue to become more passionate as I’m dancing. Having strong affection for dancing pushes me to exceed technically. Besides that it's my passion, music and other dancers inspire and motivate me to ascend to the next level. Along with inspirational dancers, the music allows me move from the soul. Dance is the music made visible George Balanchine once said, proving the beautiful sound that is heard, is followed by dance. Artists produce music based on their emotions while choreographers move based on their emotions creating extraordinary art being seen and heard through audiences eyes and ears, penetrating minds in amazement. This is why JBS will be an experience to grow as an artist and learn techniques so one day I can inspire the next generation of dancers like the staff of JBS inspire me.
Summer of 2015 saw me have the most incredible and enriching 2 weeks of my life. Not only did I learn and retain so much valuable information from the world class teachers at the Joffrey Ballet school, but I also learnt so much about myself. I grew as a person in mind, body and spirit, and living in the cultural hub of New York opened my eyes to the all the different ways that the Joffrey school could mould me into the best dancer I can be. Joffrey Baller School is one of the premiere dance schools because each teacher respects the art form so much and puts in so much love and soul into their students, its so inspiring. There is so much rich history and knowledge in the school that in only one day of classes, you can learn so much about technique, performance quality, strength, self care, history and respect for the art form. The Joffrey Ballet School allows each individual to learn in an environment that not only pushes but also cares for each student so that they can take the risks to become a true artist. I would trade anything to study at Joffrey again.
The Joffrey Southwest Jazz & Contemporary summer intensive was one of the best experiences of my life. I have been dancing since I was three, with much of my free time spent in dance lessons or with dance friends, so dance has been my comfort zone, something I love. The summer experience took it to a whole different level, challenging and changing me. Through my home studio, I learned to turn and to leap, but training with Desmond Richardson and the rest of the amazing, talented, and motivating Joffrey faculty opened my eyes to the passion and inner feeling of dance itself. I learned about more than technique in the three weeks of the intensive; about moving my body, having courage in my movement, and trying my hardest in everything I do. After going to the intensive, I now feel more proud of my dancing, and can better express ideas and feelings through dance. The Joffrey Ballet School helped me and many others throughout our stay and gave the best instruction for my moves, my rhythm, and my skill development. Joffrey Ballet School is THE world premier dance and I highly encourage anyone interested an intensive to go!
A not-so-Wicked witch once said, “I’m through accepting limits, ‘cause someone says they’re so.” Last summer, I had the honor of attending Joffrey’s new Broadway Musical Theatre program, and I can say without a doubt that the experience truly changed my life. JBS has inspired me to follow my passion in the performing arts and push beyond the limits that others have set before me. It was a privilege to be mentored by incredible instructors and to get the opportunity to see some of them perform in their Broadway shows. The daily training in dancing, singing, and acting was enhanced with lessons in other important skills needed to truly become triple threats. During my time in New York, I formed many supportive friendships with classmates from all over the world who I still talk to daily. Since the day I left last summer, I have been dreaming of returning to New York City and seeing my Joffrey family again. Mr. Prescott was an amazing mentor, teaching me one of the most valuable pieces of advice that I have received thus far. In this industry, you never know who is watching, so remember to always be “camera ready!”
"Dance isn't just my sport. It defines me." Joffrey’s 2015 Summer Intensive Program in San Francisco was AMAZING. The Joffrey Ballet School's reputation precedes itself and as the premiere dance program in the country , I received world-class training during the summer intensive. As a male dancer, it is sometimes difficult for me to "fit in" to the culture of dance programs. I often question my ability in ballet because I am normally the only male in my classes both at school and my local dance studio. Joffrey afforded me the opportunity to work with other male dancers and to challenge myself beyond my limits. Dance isn't just a part of my life, it is my life. I am passionate about dance and becoming a dance therapist and my experience at Joffrey solidified my desire to grow. This summer, I was only able to attend for one week because my baby sister was in NICU for nearly three months and my parents could only sacrifice so much due to this hardship. Being able to travel to California from Virginia was a real blessing. If granted the opportunity to return for the summer of 2016, I would truly appreciate the opportunity.
Anne Frank once said regret is a stronger emotion than gratitude. I totally get that, as a late starter in my dance education. There were many times in the studio where I regretted beginning dance at a later age than my peers. However I allowed that gnawing pang to fuel my desire to be a better dancer. And I am. But not alone, through the guidance of caring teachers who taught me the best way to improve is by truly dancing from my soul. I have had friends attend Joffrey summer intensives and I saw how their Joffrey training molded them into amazing, skillful artists! They came back from intensive transformed technically and also confidently fluent in all styles of dance. I know it is an experience demanding it's students' best by requiring hard work and focused dedication. The Joffrey faculty is the gold standard of international dance education and I can only imagine the feeling of being in class led by the renowned Desmond Richardson or Michael Blake! It amazes me I could obtain the dream to train at the most prestigious dance school and for this opportunity, I am fully embracing the flickering emotion of gratitude. No regrets!
