FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know about auditioning for The Joffrey Ballet School. You can use any of our nationwide audition locations or attend a studio auditions to qualify for any of the programs. Dancers are scored at the audition, and receive a letter of acceptance based on their score. When you are accepted into the school’s programs, you can choose any of the programs listed in your acceptance letter. You may attend one or multiple programs from the Joffrey Ballet School.
Domestic (United States) and International StudentsBallet Auditions Students auditioning for a Ballet program should bring a 5×7** photo in 1st arabesque (en l'air) to the audition. Please wear a black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers. Students en pointe should bring their pointe shoes. Boys wear black tights, black or white ballet slippers, and a black or white fitted t-shirt. Jazz/Contemporary Auditions Students auditioning for a Jazz & Contemporary program should bring a 5×7** photo of the student in a jumping pose with the dancer’s face clearly visible to the audition. Please wear a black leotard and either tights or shorts. Bring both ballet slippers, jazz shoes or jazz sneakers. Musical Theater Auditions Students auditioning for Musical Theater program should bring a 5×7** headshot along with their registration form. Please arrive to the audition already warmed up, and stretched. Be ready to dance! Also, come prepared to sing 16 bars of music from a musical. You may choose any musical you like. You will be singing your selection a cappella. There is no need to worry too much about the song choice. If you must, you may sing the national anthem, or your favorite Disney tune, as long as you give it your best shot and show that you are ready to perform. Please dress in any dance appropriate attire that the dancer will feel comfortable to move in. A jazz shoe or jazz sneaker will be appropriate. Tap Auditions (we do not have Tap auditions at any of our international locations) Students auditioning for a Tap Program should bring a 5×7** picture, in dance clothes with the dancers face visible, to the audition. Please wear a black leotard and black tights. Make sure to bring your tap shoes. Boys wear black tights or jazz pants and a black or white fitted t-shirt. Hip Hop Auditions (we do not have Hip-Hop auditions at any of our international locations) Students auditioning for the Hip Hop program should bring a 5×7** headshot to the audition. Please wear black sweatpants or hip hop pants with a t-shirt, tank top or dance top (no jeans). Please wear jazz shoes, black dance sneakers (hip hop shoes) or NEW sneakers used for dance only. No loose or hanging jewelry. Character Auditions (we do not have Character auditions at any of our international locations) Students auditioning for the Character program should bring a 5×7 inch** full body picture to the audition. Girls please wear pink tights, character skirts, character or jazz shoes and a leotard of any color. Boys wear black tights and a black or white fitted t-shirt.

Audition fees must be paid in credit if you register at the audition. We do not accept cash payments
On the Auditions page, click on a school/studio link to get directions. There is a map attached to each location.
Notification of your audition results will be emailed within two to three days after your audition. Please do not call the office within this period to ask about your results. Accepted students will receive an acceptance email shortly after their initial notification. This email will include instructions on completing your registration, and all other information pertaining to the program you have been accepted into. The Joffrey Ballet School also offers a limited amount of scholarships. These scholarships are given to the most talented students and are based on the audition. There are no forms to fill out for the scholarship. You will be informed in the letter of acceptance if you are one of the scholarship recipients. An Auditions is a class with a Joffrey Ballet School Instructor. The dancer will be scored during the class for acceptance, placement and scholarship purposes. Dancers are auditioned for summer and trainee programs.
