BalletX, Philadelphia's premier contemporary ballet, unites distinguished choreographers from around the world with an outstanding company of dancers to forge new works of athleticism, emotion, and grace. The company has been featured in residency at the Vail Dance Festival, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, and the Joyce Theater to name a few, and was hailed as "top 10 of the year in dance" by The Boston Globe in 2016. Under the direction of Christine Cox, BalletX has commissioned over 60 world premiere ballets by 35 different choreographers. BalletX will present a diverse program from some of today's leading choreographic voices for the company's return to the Joyce Ballet Festival.

Joyce: Ashley Bouder Project 2018

The Ashley Bouder Project (ABP), dedicated to promoting women and diversity within the performing arts world, will premiere new works for The Joyce’s Ballet Festival. The program will include the premieres of a solo work performed by Ashley Bouder, created by Lauren Lovette, principal dancer with the NYCB; and a piece by Abdul Latif, current resident at the Broadway Dance Lab. Rounding out the program is the remounting of Ms. Bouder’s In Pursuit of… which premiered in 2017 at Peter Norton’s Symphony Space. As part of ABP’s mission to work with women, the program will feature music by female composers, including a piece by New York Jazzharmonic’s (NYJ) co-director Miho Hazama, performed live by the NYJ, headed by Ron Wasserman.

Batsheva – The Young Ensemble performs Ohad Naharin's Bessie Award-winning dance, Naharin's Virus, inspired by the great Austrian writer Peter Handke's play, Offending the Audience. Originally created in collaboration with Batsheva dancers, the work employs Naharin’s coolly seductive aesthetic to explore the boundaries of language. Naharin's Virus features a varied soundtrack which includes classical music, original music by Karni Postel, and adaptations of traditional Arabic music by Habib Alla Jamal and Shama Khader.
